Malaria Tropica and Migraines?

When my mom was 18 she caught Malaria Tropica and was treated right away. The doctors told her that she wouldn't have any long-term effects from this. Lately she's been having really bad migraines for weeks at a time.. Could having malaria 27 years ago have anything to do with it? She's been to her doctor many times but they just prescribe pain killers, which aren't helping.. Any ideas?
