Do you need malaria tablets if visiting northern India?

I was in Rajastan in December and I did not take anti Malaria tablets and was fine but figures published today tell of rising numbers of British people contracting the disease it only needs one infected mosquito and it is possible you could die or at the very least be very ill so I guess safety first.
