I couldn't donate blood because I went to South America!?

So, it's "assumed" that I have malaria. Don't they test blood before they give it to anyone? Also, I had to get vaccinated to go there. How long do I have to wait until I can. I'm probably going to Africa in December, but if I didn't, how long until I could give blood again? And does it make sense that they'd just assume that?
